Koyuki Akari, Captain of the 4th Division, is known by greater Soul Society as the 'Alchemist'. Since becoming Captain, he has revolutionized the science of chemistry through innovative techniques and savant-like creativity, creating tonics that have prolonged life for various once-terminal illnesses and conditions. Others have improved quality-of-life in those that have suffered grievous injuries or have underlying conditions. The 12th Division has openly declared him as the foremost expert in his field—an extremely high honor they rarely give to those outside of their own group.
