Kirinonai Utsuro, Substitute-Shinigami turned Captain, owes his current position to more than just luck. Although it was a former Captain who sacrificed his life to make him a Substitute-Shinigami, and that contributed to his now incredible spiritual power, Utsuro had his own natural abilities due to witnessing two spiritual battles during his time as a human agent. His spiritual spark was so powerful that he was actually approached in the early days of Section 66 and was offered a place in their ranks—his supreme eyesight was enough to make him eligible for Bloodline, although he was never informed of the group's actual potential. He declined, stating that he was already part of an agency. Although he is not aware of how close he was to being an enemy of Soul Society, his power may one day help stop its destruction.
