Gingitsune Kaen, Captain of the 5th Division, is a polarizing figure in the Gotei 13 leadership. He is seen by many as a symbol for change within the ruling classes, a man who believes that there is stagnation within the culture of the Shinigami. Coupled with his supremely powerful position, this poses a problem to some of the more conservative nobles and military leaders, who believe him to be an upstart only worth the trouble because of his tremendous usefulness. They simply endure his antics and hope that age will bring a wisdom he so clearly 'lacks'.
