Zanpakutō Name: Toro Paciente (Patient Bull)
Zanpakutō Appearance: When stories of Bronnk Ro circulate around the unaligned regions of Hueco Mundo, the trait most commonly blown out of proportion is his impressive height. With this idea of a giant comes the general misconception that his weapon is a similarly mammoth thing that annihilates those who dare encroach upon Barracuda’s kingdom. In reality, Bronnk’s Zanpakutō is roughly the size of a dagger, and it is rarely seen by most of the enemies who manage to catch a glimpse of him from beyond the territory that he patrols. These rumors stem from the incorrect assumption that a large Arrancar must logically wield a similarly large weapon, and the misguided interpretation of the body count associated with the Octavo Espada; the bloody scenes of carnage often found along the border of La Tierra Baldía have only proven to solidify the misconception, turning it into an accepted fact among certain unintelligent groups of Hollow.
The physical manifestation of his sealed Hollow abilities, Bronnk’s Zanpakutō is roughly the size of a normal dagger; from the tip of its blade to the base of its handle, it measures only thirteen inches. Despite his large proportions, which would normally merit a better-scaled weapon to accommodate the sheer dimensions of his hands, the size remains suited to an individual of average height. This means that Bronnk must hold his Zanpakutō’s grip with only four fingers, letting his pinky either grasp at air or dangle beyond the end of the handle. Despite this, he is more than capable of wielding the dagger in close-range combat, and his height--not the dimensions of the weapon--seems to have a greater an impact on its usefulness than its size. When throwing the Zanpakutō, Bronnk holds the base of the handle between his thumb and a bent forefinger, then releases and catches it by flicking his wrist or whipping his long arm.
The actual blade of Bronnk’s Zanpakutō is curved, much like a traditional boomerang, with an angle just over one hundred degrees that makes it perfect for throwing. Unlike its human-designed counterpart, this weapon seems to be made completely of metal, and both the inner and outer edges are viciously sharpened, allowing it to deal severe damage no matter which side hits the target. The curve of the blade tapers to a sharp point on one end; on the other, leather wrappings begin forming the dark brown hilt just about halfway down the weapon. It is exceedingly rare for an Arrancar to be injured by their own Zanpakutō, so some might question the need for Bronnk to have anything between his hand and the blade of his dagger; if he were to discard it, there would be a no chance for an enemy to avoid being struck by a sharp edge. In truth, the wrappings help him grip the weapon before and between throwing it. Without them, it would be easier for him to be disarmed, which is something that he wishes to avoid.
In battle, Bronnk rarely makes use of his Zanpakutō unless he finds it to be the best way to dispatch his foes. Otherwise, he will often rely on his pure strength, his talent at Hakuda, or his Arrancar abilities to reduce his foes to broken shells. If it is required that he reveals the nature of his weapon, Bronnk will most often use it in a ranged assault, throwing it repeatedly and bringing it back to him through mental command. Unlike a returning boomerang, it is not the curvature of the weapon cutting through the air that causes it to appear back in his hand; the speed at which he throws it makes that sort of interaction with the atmosphere impossible, anyway. Bronnk’s weapon is simply attracted to his own spiritual energy, making it a simple matter for it to find the quickest path back to its owner, often destroying anything that happens to be in its way.
During his patrol or when he does not need it to defeat his enemies, Bronnk’s Zanpakutō is most often hidden within his trench-coat. He keeps it out of sight not only to fool his would-be attackers into thinking him unarmed, but also to make sure that information about his abilities cannot be gleaned by particularly intelligent opponents. For this reason, Bronnk has absolutely refused Eless’ insistent requests to see his Zanpakutō. He knows full-well that her want to categorize the abilities of the Espada will only end in her treachery, and that she might be capable of analyzing even his Resurrección from just a simple glance. Unfortunately, she continues to try, and more than once has Bronnk seen Eless’ agents observing from the edges of a battlefield. They never return to her Privilege.
Resurrección Appearance: Bronnk is a man devoted to revealing as little about himself as possible in order to compensate for his Aspect of Death. This discipline and personal view makes him one of the least likely Espada to call upon his release, sometimes waiting until he has exhausted all other options and faces almost certain death. In fact, outside of Swarrm’s release, the Octavo Espada’s Resurrección remains one of the biggest mysteries in Hueco Mundo. Only Barracuda Marracruz has seen it, and perhaps Quintalla Cora Calica has glimpsed it with her mind. Beyond those two, the true power that his Resurrección holds is a closely guarded mystery, and Bronnk’s Pesquisa allows him to ensure that none who see it survive to pass on their terrifying story.
Due to the fact that Bronnk only releases his second form when injured, he is rarely in a situation where he can go unmolested in his transformation. This would be a difficult situation for most Espada, many of whom require a specific, ritualistic movement to enter into their Resurrección. Bronnk, however, is unique in the fact that his release requires little movement, no space, and acts as a sort of defensive technique of its own. By releasing the spiritual tether between himself and his Zanpakutō, the dagger suddenly finds itself caught up in the Reiatsu of its owner. It begins rapidly circling Bronnk, flipping wildly in the air in a stream of white and silver that can vaporize almost anything that comes too close. With this defending him, he says:
“Stand Firm, Toro Paciente.”
As if to obey his order, the flying Zanpakutō suddenly stops. For just a moment, it hovers in the air as if frozen in time. Then, like a bolt of lightning, it strikes towards Bronnk’s midsection, where his Hollow-hole is hidden by his white jacket. As soon as it makes contact, orange-brown spiritual energy explodes outwards, pushing even Captain-class individuals back from the sheer pressure. The silent Bronnk--who stands at the center of this whirlwind of power--lowers his head ceremonially as the dark colored energy becomes so thick that it completely obscures him from view.
When the energy clears, Bronnk can be seen kneeling down on one leg with his head pointed towards his opponent. If his hat was still on his head as he transformed, it is now pierced by two large, bull-like horns that begin horizontal and then point straight upwards nearly a foot in both dimensions. These horns are bound to a bone plate that covers the top of Bronnk’s head from his hairline back, stopping where the slope of his skull turns down to meet his neck; the sides and rear of his hair remain unchanged and visible. The horns themselves are attached just above and in front of his ears, where the bony plate is slightly lower. Unlike the features of most released Arrancar, these mask fragments are absolutely deadly, and they act as fully functioning weapons in their own right.
Most of Bronnk’s body and attire remain visibly unchanged: his height (horns aside), clothes, and posture are identical to how they appeared before Resurrección; even the hole torn in his white jacket by his release is healed with the spiritual energy of his transformation. In many ways, Bronnk’s physical form is the least altered of all of the Espada during his release. The fact is that his self-control and timeless training has allowed him to to retain as much of his ‘human’ characteristics as possible. His appearance in his Resurrección has changed significantly over his many years as an Arrancar. Now, however, it has reached its final stage. Bronnk is both unable and unwilling to alter the features of his mask fragments due to their intrinsic representation of his nature; they are a constant, just like his Hollow-hole. The rest of the superficial changes have been eliminated. Under his clothing, he looks as human as he did before releasing.
While his body may be relatively unchanged, Bronnk’s Zanpakutō could not be any more different. Instead of a small dagger, he now holds a gunmetal-grey mace nearly as long as he is tall. The handle of the weapon measures four feet and is so thick that the Wiseman’s fingers can only just touch each other around its girth. The head of the mace, meanwhile, is three feet long and nearly as wide, taking a roughly cylindrical shape. Upon close inspection, this mace-head is surprisingly similar to the actual cylinder of a revolver, with the same kind of smoothness to the edges with repeated concave sections. If looked at from the front, the flat surface is filled with thirty holes arranged in a circular pattern like chambers in a gun. From the back, it is featureless.
Escopeta (Shotgun): The main ability of Bronnk’s Zanpakutō is related to the cylinder-like mace that he wields. While he is more than capable of pummeling his opponents to paste with his titanic strength and the sheer weight of his weapon, the true strength of his Resurrección, the Escopeta, lies in range. By mental command, Bronnk can let loose a barrage of thirty sharpened blades, all similar in shape to his unreleased, dagger-like weapon, straight from the chamber-like holes in the head of his mace. Like a shotgun, these projectiles spread out from an explosion, spinning their bladed edges at incredible speeds, tearing anything that gets in their way to shreds in a flurry of silver and white. Once the knives lose all of their kinetic energy, either through long distances or by hitting strong enough objects, they vanish into orange-brown dust. Bronnk can fire a new volley every two seconds, creating wall after wall of shredding projectiles. This can be deadly at a distance, but the closer an enemy is to the head of the mace, the more concentrated the blades are.
Armored Mask Fragments: The mask fragments that adorn Bronnk’s head are more than just an expression of his former Hollow state; they are a deadly fusion of offense and defense. The horns, which are sharp enough to cut a hair down its length, can pierce steel with ease, and Bronnk’s strength lets him ram enemies with enough force to ensure that damage is dealt. What makes this feature particularly dangerous, however, is the fact that the armored plating that covers the top of his head is nearly indestructible. While the rest of his body has the defenses granted to him by his Hierro and the special fabric that makes up his trench-coat, Bronnk’s mask fragments provide a layer of defense that makes it functionally impossible for him to sustain cranial damage from a downward strike. This is especially important, for it allows the Octavo Espada to not only block powerful attacks head-on, but also to bust through incredible defenses with his horns without sustaining irreparable damage.
Foothold: A peculiar aspect of Bronnk’s Resurrección is that he gains an ability to become functionally immovable, fusing his spiritual energy to the world around him and remaining tethered to his location. This ‘foothold’ can be broken at will, and is often done so when Bronnk needs to dodge an attack or charge an open opponent. Otherwise, he is capable of staying in a single place without fear of being moved. This is how he will usually fight: unmoving, batting away and attacking anyone who comes close, or using his Escopeta to fire projectiles at those who chose to remain at a distance. Against enemies who rely on forcing their opponents to give ground, Bronnk is a nightmare. Everything from gale-force winds to altered gravity is absolutely useless against him, and he can remain planted in one place, unfettered, through the most powerful attacks. This does not make him immune to injury, however; while he can use his armored head to bash through a thrown boulder without budging an inch, he still risks injury to the rest of his body, even if he does not move. The only individual that Bronnk believes can move him in this state is Darssus Tortall.
