Overload Appearance: Bernie may be a man driven by a psychopathic mind, but he is in no way suicidal; he knows that overloading his Bloodline is an absolute, unavoidable death-sentence. His ego and general contempt for others holds him back from seeing a situation worthy enough for him to sacrifice his own life to end someone else’s. This, combined with his lack of zealotry for the Section 66 cause, actually makes Bernie one of the least likely to rely on his model’s overload, thinking of it as an absolute last resort instead of a final push against the tyranny of the spiritual world. Only an individual who could press him completely beyond his means, out-pacing him in battle in every way, would run the risk of forcing his hand so gravely, and even then, Bernie would exhaust all other methods of killing before sacrificing his own life to end his opponent’s. Should that final card be drawn, there is no turning back: The Most Dangerous Man in the World would truly earn his name.
To overload his Bloodline, Bernie has no choice but to stop his attack; otherwise, the sheer build-up in power released by the nanites within him would threaten to rip him apart from the inside. Standing still, likely for the first time since blood was spilled, the Knifepoint Killer lets his arms rest at his sides. His palms, sweat-laden from throwing and cutting with his beloved knives, curl in on themselves as if he were strangling the air. His knuckles turn white as he concentrates on building up the spiritual power around and within him, bringing his Reiatsu to a level that cracks the ground beneath his feet and splits the clouds in the sky as if an axe had swept through them. Then, with his power at an absolute pinnacle, he releases his hold on his spiritual pressure, screaming:
“Overload Bloodline Model: Cruor.”
The ripping words echo, and for a moment the atmosphere around Bernie seems to go silent in their wake. The oppressive spiritual pressure vanishes, and the area comes under a disturbing calm—an eye of the storm. The man’s black eyes, devoid of emotion, look up at the person he intends to kill first. He then says, calmly:
“Authorization: For murder, though it have no tongue, will speak.”
As soon as the final consonant of his Shakespearean pass-phrase sounds, the limiter on Bernie’s Bloodline switches off, overloading the mechanics of his nanites and sending them into a veritable feeding frenzy, ending the eerie silence with an explosion of spiritual turmoil. They begin gorging themselves on his own life-force to produce his power, forgoing the ‘seed’ spiritual energy of his Reiryoku for the far more potent—and far more lethal—alternative. While the clear Reiatsu emitted from his body becomes unnatural and absolutely devastating, ripping apart buildings and flattening metal structures, this transformation begins the countdown towards Bernie’s inevitable demise. Not only can his body not support the progressive damage to his life-force and Reiryoku for more than a few minutes, the cybernetic augments that begin to form take a permanent, unrecoverable turn; shutting off his Bloodline once it has begun would prove fatal, as the flesh-and-bone that was once the Knifepoint Killer quickly becomes something more.
Millions of droplets of silver and black metal rapidly begin to surround Bernie, drawn from the energy in the atmosphere to augment his body. The cybernetics that had been on him during his activation also liquefy and join the field of hovering, shimmering raindrops, adding to their number before they suddenly draw in on him en masse, pinpointing his eyes, the top of his head, his back, and his arms. The energy released in this moment, which happens just a few seconds after the authorization for overload is given, is significantly beyond that of a Captain-class Bankai or the Resurrección of most Espada. It is enough to bring some of the most powerful beings in existence to their knees.
As soon as the immense power subsides into a dull ache, Bernie can be seen standing, transformed, in the full state of his Overload. Gone are his remorseless eyes; they are replaced by black metal globes that rest in fully mechanized silver sockets. A shimmering red ring of light—similar to an iris—glows in the center of each one, absorbing massive amounts of visual information and sending it directly to his brain to be processed by the nanites that now control most of his subconscious functions. The silver metal pieces that make up his transformed eye sockets spread out horizontally in rectangular shapes to the sides of his temples. Small black metal squares rest within the ends, marking where the augmentations bore into his skull and connect with the rest of his ‘enhancements’. These manifestations of the Cruor Bloodline are as much a part of Bernie as his own flesh and are seamlessly integrated into his body.
The incomplete, hairband-like augmentation that rested on Bernie’s head during his activation is now fully connected. More than that, it is far larger, enveloping both of his ears in the blocky silver and black cybernetics. The band of this enhancement has also become far thicker, buried in his skull and extending three inches above his hair like a crescent crown or an unfolded hand-fan. Vertical black lines segment this crest in five equal pieces, each one featuring three patterned black squares that hold the massive amounts of technology that power the brain enhancements of his overload. In order to defend this important augment, this particular piece of machinery is highly durable, able to conceivably outlast the rest of Bernie’s body.
Bernie’s forearms no longer exist as flesh and bone; they have been completely reshaped into black and silver mechanical cutting instruments, good only for murder. They are the perfect physical embodiment of what his own human hands had been used for during his life as the Knifepoint Killer. His elbows to the base of his ‘wrists’ are finely crafted cybernetic replacements made from both black and silver metal that take the shape of forearms, only with more corners and a distinctly ‘blocky’ feel to them that makes their appearance notably inhuman. His hands, which had been the tools through which he had manipulated his many methods of killing, are now instruments of death themselves. With five bladed fingers made completely of segmented black metal that bear a distinct resemblance to his personal collection of knives, Bernie is capable of slashing without the need to handle tools, finally making him the weapon that he was always meant to be. These knife-like fingers are attached directly to a silver metal ‘hand’.
The final change to Bernie’s appearance during his overload is perhaps the most unusual, and certainly the most unnatural. From the base of his neck down to his tailbone rests a series of eight rectangular extensions—similar to the objects that the Quincy use to produce their disposable weapons—made from silver metal (with a black streak in the center of each). These pieces of his Bloodline connect to his spinal cord, and as he bends, they follow suit, curling in the path that his body takes them in disturbing synchronization. Periodically, a brilliant red web of solid spiritual particles, similar in shade to his augmented irises, connects these jutting mechanical rods to make Bernie’s back look like a segmented, fan-like, webbed spine. This is a byproduct of his Bloodline’s massive energy intake, which funnels particles from the atmosphere to fuel the incredible processes happening within Bernie’s body.
Overload Abilities:
Gruesome Motor Control: The perfect motor control granted to Bernie during his activation continues on into his overload, and his body is far more capable of keeping up with the demands that he sets for it, making him more dangerous based solely on the accuracy of his movements. Before, he could manage superhuman movements perfectly. Now, his powers begin to border on instantaneous limb actions. His overall place-to-place running speed is not quite as spectacular, however. The true improvement is a more terrible, disturbing thing; Bernie becomes double-jointed in all areas of his body. This flexibility is absolutely inhuman, allowing him to bend his legs backwards at the knee, or twist his head around one hundred and eighty degrees to look behind him. The psychological effects of this can be acute, but the true devastation is his newfound ability to be lethal from any position, and his sudden immunity to being safely back-stabbed or flanked. Able to bend his arms backwards painlessly, he can stab an opponent behind him as easily and accurately as he can one in front of him. Defending against his lightning fast attacks is made far more difficult since he can twist his limbs awkwardly and unpredictably, skirting around defenses in unthinkable ways.
• Total Body Vibration: One of the most physically devastating techniques in Section 66, and perhaps in existence, is Bernie’s ability to finely vibrate his entire body, calling upon and manipulating joints that would never otherwise be able to move with any significant range of motion. Like the vibration ability of his activation, this rapid movement allows Bernie to cut into incredibly durable materials with terrifying ease without exerting much physical force. The difference in his overload, however, is that his entire body becomes a weapon thanks to his newfound ability to utilize every joint so completely. So fast and so fine is this movement that he can casually walk right through the side of a building, leaving a humanoid hole behind without disrupting its foundation; he can burrow into the ground while appearing to stand still; or he can even cause his body to cut through the weapon meant to pierce it, turning his offense into an effective defense. While this does not allow him to withstand all attacks and does nothing to prevent energy-based techniques from hurting him, it makes him far more difficult to withstand during his relentless assault.
